Curator’s clip description

Sixteen-year-old singer Marcia Hines was brought to Australia from the USA by the producers of the rock musical Hair in the 1960s. She decided to stay, and became one of Australia’s most popular singers.

Curator’s notes

The clip notes that Marcia Hines came to Australia as the White Australia Policy of the 60s had meant that there were few black performers available to cast in Hair – a sad reflection on the times. The clip shows the young Marcia Hines rehearsing in a television studio with her band, clearly in control.
