Curator’s notes

Australasian editions of the Gazette combined local and international news items and screened to cinema audiences from around 1908 until the First World War. Newsreels were an integral part of cinema programming in Australia before the advent of television in 1956 and would screen before the feature program. Silent newsreels frequently used title cards to introduce each news item identifying the event and place.
