Nazi Supergrass (1993)

Documentary

Length: 52 minutes 30 seconds

Synopsis

The Australian Nationalist Movement conducted a campaign of racial hatred on Perth for three years from 1986. They were opposed to Asians, Jews and Blacks. They bombed Asian restaurants and carried out verbal and physical abuse. They were arrested and convicted on the evidence of one of their members, Russell Willey, who grassed in exchange for immunity.

Curator’s notes

The documentary gives an excellent insight into the workings of a racist organisation. The betrayer and the betrayed make for a dramatic documentary. The filmmakers agreed to film the grass, Russell Willey, in secret locations as his life was in danger. His whereabouts is unknown to this day. Mr Willey wore dark glasses and a wig, adding a bizarre note to the interview segments.

Director David Bradbury has many successful documentary credits to his name including Fond Memories of Cuba, Wamsley’s War, Jabiluka, Loggerheads and The Battle for Byron. Producer Anthony Buckley is one of Australia’s most experienced producers in both drama and documentary. His feature film credits include Caddie, Bliss, Oyster Farmer and On Our Selection. His television credits include Jessica, Heroes’ Mountain and The Potato Factory.
