Curator’s clip description

Every year, hundreds of thousands of Muslim pilgrims make the journey to Mecca in Saudi Arabia for the Hajj. They come by boat, on foot and on camel. On reaching Mecca, they gather at the holy Kaaba and begin their ritual of worship.

Curator’s notes

At the beginning of this segment, Hurley mentions in voice-over that the footage of the Hajj was filmed by his ‘Muslim friends’ from the Cairo film studios. Hurley was based at the film studios during his six years covering the Second World War for the Department of Information.
