This clip from a Menzies home movie features the Prime Minister of Canada, McKenzie King, and the Governor General of Canada, the Earl of Athlone and his wife Princess Alice.

Curator’s notes

Filmed during Sir Robert’s visit to Canada in 1941, this clip captures part of the first visit of an Australian Prime Minister to Canada and features William Lyon McKenzie King, the tenth Prime Minister of Canada.

It also features the Governor General of Canada, the Earl of Athlone who supported the war effort by inspecting troops, training schools and military hospitals and his wife Princess Alice who was the Honorary Commandant of the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service, Honorary Air Commandant of the Royal Canadian Air Force (Women’s Division) and President of the Nursing Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade.

Sir Robert Menzies edited the home movie on his return to Australia and added intertitles to introduce the Canadian Prime Minister and Governor General.
