Curator’s clip description
While her father is away mustering cattle, Jessica Harrison (Sigrid Thornton) goads new stock hand Jim Craig (Tom Burlinson) into breaking her father’s prized colt. Their romance blossoms as he demonstrates his great empathy with the horse.
Curator’s notes
Apart from anything else, the film offered a huge menu of beautiful creatures to admire, and stunning landscapes. This sequence is like an advertisement for the burgeoning romance, calculated to increase the film’s appeal with young viewers – especially women. It has all the elements of romance fiction – strapping young man, darkly beautiful heroine, wild beast, and the amazing clarity of the mountain light.
