Les Darcy vs Dave Smith for the Championship of Australia (1916)
Length: 16 minutes
Synopsis
Historical footage of Australian Middleweight Champion Les Darcy and Dave Smith training together at Sydney Harbour and later in a boxing match on 24 June 1916.
Curator’s notes
Les Darcy, the ‘Maitland Wonder’, is considered by many to be one of Australia’s best boxers. This footage shows a relaxed Darcy skipping rope, wrestling and sparring on the edge of Sydney’s Harbour; and highlights from the first of two boxing matches between Darcy and his former trainer and mentor, Smith. Darcy’s last fight was only a few months after this bout and was against George Chip (see Les Darcy’s Last Fight: Les Darcy vs George Chip (1916)). He died within a year of this footage being filmed at the young age of 22.
