Curator’s clip description

In the midst of a large outdoor festival, Kenny (Shane Jacobson) has to deal with a casual employee – a university student – who thinks the work is beneath him. When the uni student (Ant Keogh) tells him that a woman has lost her ring down the toilet, Kenny tells him he has to retrieve it – without gloves.

Curator’s notes

The film is never afraid to go where no film has been before. Part of its strategy is a confrontation with embarrassment, which we see so clearly in this clip. This scene will probably go down as the single greatest deterrent to the recruitment of apprentice plumbers in 100 years of Australian cinema. At the same time it’s kind of heroic – there is no task too horrible or onerous for Kenny, who knows what the loss of a ring – presumably a wedding ring – means to a person.
