Curator’s clip description

Mick (Paul Hogan) has left signs in the sand for where he wants Wally (John Meillon) to lead the remaining two villains, Rico (Hechter Ubarry) and Miguel (Juan Fernandez). At a billabong, Rico sends Wally into the water first, when he appears to be taken by a crocodile – another of Mick’s elaborate tricks.

Curator’s notes

John Meillon’s contribution to the humour of the first two films was substantial. His immense experience in movies, his comic presence, and his understanding of the minimalism of film acting, gave both films a more solid base of characterisation. Paul Hogan’s acting experience was almost completely confined to his TV skit comedy shows. These were immensely popular, and his persona was well established, but screen acting posed a different set of challenges for him. The pairing with Meillon helped to smooth that transition. The role was one of Meillon’s last. He died in 1989, at the age of 55, of liver disease, leaving a legacy of superb character roles in Australian film and television, many featured on this site. His voice can still be heard in the ‘big cold beer’ advertisements on TV.
