Compass – Embracing the Enemy (2005)
Synopsis
Turkish immigrants to Australia in the 1970s immediately felt connected through the Anzac Day marches but found they were forbidden to march with the Australians. Thus began a long campaign to be acknowledged, just as their great leader Atatürk had acknowledged the bravery of the Allied troops who came ashore at Anzac Cove in Turkey.
Curator’s notes
It’s a wonderful concept that the great heroes of Gallipoli, both Australian and Turkish, should be celebrated by Australians. It’s a concept that the Turkish immigrants brought to Australia in the 1970s and it has gradually caught on.
