Curator’s clip description
Craig Hamilton suffered a breakdown in 2000. He needed a good mate to talk to about the possibility of going public with his story. He found that friend in Paul Harrigan, the great Newcastle football legend.
Curator’s notes
In order to raise a sensitive and difficult subject Compass has found the sort of men that other men look up to – a sporting hero and a sporting commentator, and shows them able to reach out to each other. Craig and Paul have a regular get together to talk about their lives. Craig talks movingly about how helpful it has been to have the support of someone like Paul and how helpful he was when he wondered whether he had what it would take to go public with a book about his bi-polar disease. The overall effect of the clip, ending on Craig signing his book in a shopping mall is triumphant and uplifting, even in this short excerpt.
