Curator’s clip description

In the salon, the women work long hours for very little pay while the women they attend to are the socialites of Sydney society. Mrs Darcy-Twining (Pat Bishop) and her mousey daughter (Lucinda Jones) arrive at the salon expecting to be served immediately despite it being a busy day in the salon.

Curator’s notes

The world of the beauty salon is captured by the blue and white décor and the wonderful interplay between the different characters of the three women who work there.

A major theme of the series is that at a time when everyone is expected to practice austerity, for some the war is an opportunity to make a fortune out of wartime shortages and the unscrupulous resort to the black market. Nowhere is this more obvious than amongst the clientele of this chic hotel.
