Jean (Brenda Blethyn) is drunk after the funeral of a neighbour. Tim (Khan Chittenden), Jill (Emma Booth), Kelly (Katie Wall) and Mark (Richard Wilson) return to a frosty reception after an afternoon of ice-skating. For the first time Tim stands up to his mother, but she orders them all to leave her house.
Curator’s notes
The undeclared war between Jean and Jill boils over once Jean sees that Tim is now prepared to assert control over his mother. The scene is exquisitely embarrassing as Jean’s drunken grief turns into anger – for her lost youth, her lost relationship with her son, and his growing independence.
