Curator’s notes

Chequerboard was a ground breaking social documentary series that began on the ABC in the late 1960s and continued for six years. This was a time of great change in Australian society – with the sexual revolution, the women’s movement and the Vietnam War to name just a few of the cataclysms of that time. Chequerboard relentlessly filmed at some of the fault lines of that era. This remarkable series was revisited in 2000 with six programs. One of the original researchers and now award-winning documentary director, Aviva Ziegler, found some of those original participants, to discover what had happened to their lives in the intervening 30 years or so.
