Curator’s clip description

A dramatised scene from the diary memories of Percy Deane (Harold Hopkins), who became secretary to Prime Minister WM Hughes (Martin Vaughan).

Curator’s notes

The clip shows a most unconventional job interview, and cleverly portrays something of the character of the two men.

There’s a lovely moment that captures the formality of office relationships in that era. Percy and the stenographer, who was to become his wife, say good evening at the end of a long day. This sweet gesture captures both the era and the personalities of the protagonists. Featuring great performances and assured directing, this is a terrific way to learn about history.
