Curator’s clip description

This clip shows the newly refurbished interior of Lakemba Post Office in Sydney, followed by the sprucing up of a similarly older style post office.

Curator’s notes

Prior to corporatisation Australia Post owned valuable building assets throughout the country in the form of its thousands of post offices. Indeed as is stated in the clip, some post offices had been built prior to federation. During the 1980s and 1990s many of these older buildings were sold for revenue under the new corporate requirements. Where these post office buildings had occupied prominent high street positions in suburbs and regional centres, the new look post offices were relocated to smaller premises within retail zones or complexes.

The post office featured in the latter part of the clip is an excellent example of an old post office building in stage one of the metamorphosis to today’s PostShop. While the workers renovate the interior in accordance with the 1987 Corporate Identity Program, the bones of the old government administered post office are still clearly visible.
